Sustainable and Resilient

Our U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015 entry, the SURE HOUSE, represents the Stevens Institute of Technology team’s vision of a sustainable and resilient home for the areas at greatest risk due to rising sea-levels and more damaging storms. Learn more

Current Project Status:

Getting our systems ready for our first dry run this week.

Why we're building the SURE HOUSE.

This is not just a contest entry for us. We are striving to build in a world affected by a changing climate, working to educate the next generation of innovators, and do our part to help the New Jersey Shore bounce back from the damaging effects of Hurricane Sandy. Learn more

Mitigating climate change while bracing for its effects.

Educating the next generation of problem solvers.

Partnering with Seaside Park and the Jersey Shore.

Flood-Proof Testing

In order to ensure SURE HOUSE is resilient against hurricane situations, the team created waterproof details that would stand the loads of flood water and debris, as determined analytically above. In order to test details formulated, the team constructed multiple test “boxes” built in the same manner as the proposed house.

Stevens + Solar Decathlon

The SURE HOUSE is not only a student design project. It is one that will be built, rigorously tested, extensively toured, and finally lived in. Luckily this isn’t our first solar powered rodeo. The SURE HOUSE is the 3rd consecutive Stevens Institute of Technology entry in the Solar Decathlon competition. Learn more
