In hurricane season, a host of factors can conspire to cause damage to a home. Tree limbs break, the power goes out, water creeps into otherwise dry basements, and small backyard objects cause surprising damage when carried aloft by high winds. The best way to protect your property from damage is to check things out before the seasonal storms hit and then prepare for the worst.

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to nearly $15 billion in damage, according to the National Weather Service. Water and wind are the primary culprits.

Marketwatch: PSEG Grants Stevens Institute of Technology $250,000 Towards Construction of SURE HOUSE

Further supporting its commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, the PSEG Foundation has granted Stevens Institute of Technology$250,000 towards the completion of the University’s Solar Decathlon entry, SURE HOUSE.

The SURE (SUstainable and REsilient) HOUSE is Stevens’ entry into the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon competition and represents the schools’ vision of a sustainable and resilient home for the areas at greatest risk during extreme weather. The student-built, net-zero, solar-powered home is currently being built in Hoboken, New Jersey and will soon be shipped to Irvine, California for entry into the competition.

PSEG’s partnership with Stevens Institute of Technology is aligned with the company’s corporate citizenship priorities which include collaborating with organizations that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives and improving learning and educational opportunities in areas of STEM. Funds from the PSEG Foundation grant are being used in part to fund the SURE HOUSE construction as well as entry into the Solar Decathlon.

Stevens Institute of Technology students have created a sustainable house using solar power for the U.S. Department of Energy contest Solar Decathlon 2015. They say it is a useful design for the Jersey Shore.
